Elements of Watercolor

A Basic One Day Tutorial Course for Beginners

with Ian Cooke

This is a weekend introduction to the basics of watercolor to enable new students to join

one of our regular classes with the basic knowledge of how to handle this challenging but

rewarding medium.

We will talk about recommended materials but we would ask you to have the basics to

enable you to take part. Subjects covered will include -

The importance of the proportion of water and paint, handling brushes

Brushes – sable or synthetic, care of brushes

Papers – Rough, cold press or hot press

Paints, colors and setting out your palette

The color wheel and complimentary colors

Warm and cool colors, granulation, transparency, staining, permanency

Mixing – on the palette, the paper and your brush

Highlights, reserving whites, using miskit, white paints, correcting mistakes

Creating volume, Shadows and shapes

In the morning you will have the opportunity to complete a simple still life using the

techniques you have learned. We will stop for lunch and you can bring your own or there is

a Coffee shop over the road with food. In the afternoon we will learn some more techniques

and have the opportunity to try these by completing a desert landscape. We will also learn

about

Composition – ‘rule’ of thirds

Techniques – washes, glazes, dry bush, spattering, scraping

The basics of perspective, painting lines

Salt, straws, runny paint, dropping, clingfilm and other textures

Skies – blue skies and clouds

Trees, bushes, palms and grasses

Brickwork, timber, rocks, beaches and water
