Artist Statement
Scott Jay Marr was trained as a Scenic Painter, Set and Costume Designer. He worked for the Lyric Opera of Chicago for 32 years. At Lyric he designed both sets and costumes for numerous productions. He notably designed sets and costumes for Lyric’s 2022-23 season opening production of Ernani. He has worked with many artists/designers including David Hockney and Zandra Rhodes. He was associate scenic designer for the world premier production of McTeague by film director Robert Altman. At DePaul Opera Theater he was the scenic designer for the American premier of The Marriages Between Zones 3, 4, and 5 composed by Philip Glass. Scott was also assistant to illustrator Maurice Sendak for Brundibar produced at Chicago Opera Theater. As a scenic painter he worked for the prestigious Spoleto Festival USA in Charleston, South Carolina. He retired from his professional career in the fall of 2022 and moved to Palm Springs. He now has an artist studio downtown in the historical NOIA Building.

It was natural for Scott to approach his new chapter as a fine artist that encompasses both his abilities as a sculptor and painter. His works are essentially dioramas that are often inspired by mandalas. They are embedded with personal spiritual meaning. Each creation begins with a conceptual ink drawing. Then every individual sculptural component is hand drawn and cut out of watercolor paper. At times acetate, wire, and mesh are also introduced. His works are painted with acrylics and india inks after assembling. Finally the pieces are encased in UV filter acrylic that protect the delicacy of the creations.

Scott is a lover of nature. He seeks beauty. He feels blessed to live in the paradise of Palm Springs where the vibrancy of botanical wonders surround us. You will often find butterflies, dragonflies, bees, and birds in his work. These winged creatures are symbols of the celebration of life and what might be possible if we allow ourselves to dream …..use our imagination.
